Are you serious about checking your web pages to see what your visitors see?

Try this setup:

  • Start with your monitor set to 800x600 or 1024x800 (if your eyes are good).
It is really handy to be able to get to other stuff on your desktop.
  • With your browser set at 800x600, now un-maximize your browser.
  • Drag the top edge to the top of your screen, (unless you like to park things there).
  • You will want to drag the bottom edge of your browser to the bottom of your screen.
If you have a menu-bar at the bottom, then just touch it.
  • OK, move the browser to the right edge of your screen.
  • Drag the left edge in or out until you can just see all of the grey box below,
    or the 612 wide box.
  • You are all set to watch the web in the 640 realm.
  • You may want to move some of your desk-top icons and shortcuts to the
far left of your desktop, so you can have access to them whilst surfing.
  • WEB-TV? try this screen: WEBTV LAYOUT

This is "ONE SCREEN" on a "standard" Netscape browser:  <table width=610 border=1>

Windows 16 colors (PSP's opinion)

Everything on this page is a graphic, except for this area. This font is the standard proportional size 3 font, normally Times New Roman.

This is a size 3 Arial font. and should be just a slightly larger verticle size as the one above.  I suggest size=2.

This is Courier, or <TT> (typewriter) style, and is a fixed pitch font. This is font size=3.  You may want to show it in a size=2 too.

So, there you have it.  Notice that all
boxes above have their lengths stated
to include the box frame as well.

"To make a page that looks bad at 640x480 is a sin.
Don't be so smug to think everyone should have the
latest equipment/plug-ins to visit your site.

Note the wasted space on the left.

There is a reason for all of this.  Many people watch the web at this window width. If you want to see your pages, the way they do, then this is the correct settings.

I am not going to pretend that a wider window isn't better for you to cruise the Internet, but only that it is important that you realize that MOST of your visitors can't. Web-TV is growing in popularity, and they won't be able to read your stuff set with more than this window width. Remember, we are talking pixels, not inches.

OH, did I forget to tell you? Set your colors to 256, not millions. You will not only surf faster, but see your pages like most people do.

Give it a year or maybe two, and most everyone might have better stuff. In the mean time, you will look good to everyone. (IMHO)
